In-plane phase transition of an integral membrane protein: nucleation of the OmpF matrix porin rectangular polymorph.

A hexagonal polymorph (a = 79 A) of OmpF matrix porin from Escherichia coli spontaneously transforms to a rectangular form (a = 79 A, b = 137 A) after several months' storage in the refrigerator. Nucleation of this second polymorph is first disclosed by diffuse streaks in electron diffraction patterns or in computer-generated Fourier transforms of electron microscope images. With time, this str...

First order temperature dependent phase transition in a monoclinic polymorph crystal of 1,6-hexanedioic Acid: an interpretation based on the landau theory approach.

Crystals of 1,6-hexanedioic acid (I) undergo a temperature-dependent reversible phase transition from monoclinic P21/c at a temperature higher than the critical temperature (Tc) 130 K to another monoclinic P21/c at temperature lower than Tc. The phase transition is of first order, involving a discontinuity and a tripling of the b-axis at Tc whereas the other unit cell parameters vary continuous...

Influence of substrate mineralogy on bacterial mineralization of calcium carbonate: implications for stone conservation.

The influence of mineral substrate composition and structure on bacterial calcium carbonate productivity and polymorph selection was studied. Bacterial calcium carbonate precipitation occurred on calcitic (Iceland spar single crystals, marble, and porous limestone) and silicate (glass coverslips, porous sintered glass, and quartz sandstone) substrates following culturing in liquid medium (M-3P)...

Investigation into the temperature dependence of isotropic- nematic phase transition of Gay- Berne liquid crystals

Density functional approach was used to study the isotropic- nematic (I-N) transition and calculate the values of freezing parameters of the Gay- Berne liquid crystal model. New direct and pair correlation functions of a molecular fluid with Gay- Berne pair potential were used. These new functions were used in density functional theory as input to calculate the isotropic- nematic transition den...

Memristive phase switching in two-dimensional 1T-TaS2 crystals

Scaling down materials to an atomic-layer level produces rich physical and chemical properties as exemplified in various two-dimensional (2D) crystals including graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, and black phosphorus. This is caused by the dramatic modification of electronic band structures. In such reduced dimensions, the electron correlation effects are also expected to be significan...
